Sports…Some consider it a form of entertainment, some consider it a hobby, and some even consider it a matter of life and death. Whatever you may think about sports, the one thing it definitely does is teach us about life: Fair play, hard work, integrity, will power, sacrifice, all rolled into a capsule which we can then consume.
Brings Out the Best
Poker may not be considered a traditional sport, but what would you call a game that pits one player against the other, tests their skills, and even has a World Series Championship. That, in our eyes, qualifies as sport. There is something about competing with a fellow being that brings out the best in us. After all, nobody wants to come second. This pushes us to exceed our own limits, as we strive to get better and better. The beauty of sports is that it plays out in two different ways – individual events and team events.
Games such as tennis and badminton can be viewed as a battle with oneself as much as a battle with the opponent. You are out there on court, all alone, under the spotlight. There is no escape, except to lay out everything you have.
Team events, like football, allow you to interlink with others on the pitch to boost your own skill and performance. Here you are allowed the rare luxury of having a bad day and still ending up on the side that wins.
The Next Step
Over the years, the definition of sports has evolved to include more esoteric varieties. A case in point is e-sports. With the evolution of the internet and gaming technology, e-sports has evolved into a billion dollar industry that hosts competitive events where players from all over the world get together and test their skills.
